Therapy For Neck Cough Prolonged Chest Coughing
A chest condition such as bronchitis or pneumonia may have initially caused your cough however now you have acquired irritation in your neck causing a persistent neck cough. This can be frustrating since overall you are probably better but the cough lingers and becomes the main problem. The treatment for a neck cough generally differs from the chest cough. Basically you need to break the vicious cycle of coughing which begets coughing while your respiratory tract heals. The key to recovery is to avoid new irritation and suppressing the cough reflex. To control your cough during the day time, consider throat lozenges or hard candy to suck on. Some Over-the-counter lozenges have benzocaine a topical anesthetic that helps diminish the cough reflex. There are prescription medications which help block coughing such as Tessalon perles; please consult your physician.
To control your cough at night, your physician could consider Benadryl or Codeine with or without Tylenol. Both of these medicines can help block the cough reflex and help you sleep as well. Please see the "General Therapy" section.
