ABOUT THE ARTIST

Pauletta M. Chanco was born and raised in Manila, Philippines until the age of 17 when she came to California to study painting at UC Berkeley. She had the good fortune to study under Karl Kasten, Joan Brown, Chris Brown, Elmer Bischoff, George Miyasaki, Sylvia Lark, Mary O’Neal, Hassel Smith, and Richard Shaw. She also attended hands-on seminars with Nathan Oliveira to learn about painterly methods in printmaking.

Early in her life, Pauletta discovered a deep connection between painting and the spiritual life. It was not until her late 30’s that she began to examine and become inspired by this connection enough to manifest it in her paintings. (See artist statement) She has taught painting, drawing and independent study as visiting faculty at UC Berkeley and continues to lecture about the importance of creativity for everyone and how it can nurture one’s soul, at every opportunity.

Pauletta hopes to reach bigger and bigger audiences with her work in the hopes that engaging in it will help the world to slow down and find deep inner solace and connection with the works which she executes to operate as kind of contemplation pieces because many of her collectors have expressed their amazement at how the paintings will change in appearance and in what they reveal and conceal from day to day. This is a testament to how seemingly “fixed and arrested” works of art such as paintings have an inner, vibrant life force of its own depending on what each individual viewer brings to the visual process of looking at them.
