Unfortunately there are many causes of coughing besides the simple and common causes I have listed. More difficult diagnoses usually require further questioning and routine tests such as chest x-rays. Certain unusual causes of coughing I have seen include inhalation of food or foreign body, vigorous use of nasal sprays, indoor fumes and subtle heart or lung conditions.
